Pete Cross, New Generations Director, along with Jacob Guerrero, a student at Vivian Field is featured in the Dallas Morning News. The featured article raises the awareness and value of our club's mentoring program. Pete has champion this program for many years working with Victoria Mendoza. He not only mentors many students himself, but organizes other members to mentor CFBISD students.

Pete Cross, Graig Greenway, and Sugie Maxfield begin the program in 1999. As many as 28 of our members were involved in the program in 2008. Over the years, our members have mentored close to 300 students at the elementary and middle schools of CFBISD. Currently 15 members along with spouses are mentoring students.

Pete is the first to tell you that the person that holds the program together is Victoria Mendoza. Her drive and knowledge of both the kids along with the limitations of the program makes it successful.

Pete and our members have wonderful success stories.  One of Pete's students was held back in the 2nd grade for attitude, participation and grades.  He simply did not like school and any display of authority.  Pete started with him in the 2nd grade.  He is now in te 5th grade, loves school, loves to read, and is getting A's and B's.  He has a goal to get an appointment to one of the military academies.

Our Rotary Club also helps getting the school supplies and back packs these students need each year. Regina Edwards with the help of Fred Ferguson, Victoria Mendoza, and Pete select both the supplies and back packs.  Our club also treats the kids to a special gathering with gifts for all. This event will be coming up early next year.

Pete points out that this is a serious "Service above self" program.  It is a labor of love for all involved and we need more volunteers.  If interested, please contact Pete Cross via emal or just check with him at one of our weekly meetings.
