On March 17th Andy Rittler, Director of Corporate Affairs, with LBJ Express updated us on the 5 year construction project for LBJ Expressway.  This is $2.7 billion dollar projects began a couple of months ago with tree removal and residential fence removal.  The project when complete will increase the capacity of LBJ Expressway from 180,000 cars per day to 500,000 per day.  This will be accomplished with managed toll lanes with speeds of at least 50 mph.  While TxDot will maintain the ownership of the expressway, LBJ Express will operate and maintain the expressway for 52 years.

Construction will take 5 years.  The contractors have incentives to do as much of the work during evening hours and weekends as possible. The construction has started at the perimeters with utilities and sound wall fences and will move to the middle beginning with the construction of the main lanes this summer.

The scope of the project is from just east of US 75 to Luna Road on the west, but also includes IS35E from Loop 12 to just north of LBJ Expressway.

For more information go to LBJ Express website.

The video below gives you a fly over of the project. It begins at Loop 12 going north, then merging with 635 going east to US 75.
